Two birds, two reserves

These are not abstractions. They are two of the rarest hummingbirds on Earth, each holding on in one small corner of Ecuador.

Blue-throated Hillstar

Oreotrochilus cyanolaemus IUCN CR

Discovered as recently as 2018, this hummingbird lives only on a handful of high páramo ridges in southern Ecuador, feeding on the orange chuquiraga flower. Cerro de Arcos protects the windswept grassland it depends on.

Quito's own hummingbird, found nowhere else. Around 250 remain in the cloud forest on the slopes of Pichincha and Atacazo. Yanacocha protects the flowering shrubs it needs through the year, an hour from Lilly's studio.

Who is Fundación Jocotoco?

An Ecuadorian conservation organization that protects threatened species by buying and managing land as nature reserves. They manage both Cerro de Arcos and Yanacocha.

Is it 10% of profit or 10% of the sale?

10% of the sale price, before our costs. If you buy a $38 tee, $3.80 goes to Jocotoco.

When does the money arrive?

We make one transfer per year, on October 29, and publish the receipt on this page.
